Why EV Insurance Is Different

Standard car insurance policies often contain gaps that leave EV owners exposed

🔋

Battery Replacement Cover

A replacement EV battery can cost £8,000–£20,000. Standard car insurance typically excludes the battery as it's not a 'mechanical part' by traditional definitions. Specialist EV insurance covers new-for-old battery replacement following a fault or collision.

🏠

Home Charger & Cable Cover

Your home wallbox and charging cables are at risk of theft, accidental damage and electrical faults. EV-specific insurance covers your charging equipment as part of your vehicle policy — something standard home and car insurance may not do.

Public Charging Liability

Incidents at public charging stations — cable trips, charging equipment damage, overstay penalties — can fall into a grey area between your car policy and the charging network's liability. Specialist EV insurance clarifies and covers these situations.

📊

Battery Health Monitoring Integration

Leading EV insurers now offer discounts based on your battery's state of health data and your charging behaviour. Good habits — like not regularly charging to 100% — can lower your premium over time.

🔐

Keyless Entry & Cyber Protection

Modern EVs are increasingly software-driven. Keyless relay attacks and OTA software vulnerabilities are new and growing risks. EV specialist policies include enhanced protection against electronic theft and cyber incidents.

🚗

Courtesy EV — Not a Petrol Car

Standard insurers provide a petrol or diesel courtesy car which is essentially useless if your charging setup is EV-specific. Specialist EV insurance guarantees a courtesy electric vehicle while yours is being repaired.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is EV insurance more expensive than petrol car insurance?
EV insurance can be slightly higher than equivalent petrol vehicles due to battery replacement costs, but specialist EV insurers are increasingly competitive. Your no-claims discount, location and annual mileage have a bigger impact on your premium than the fuel type.
Does standard car insurance cover the EV battery?
Not always. Some standard policies treat the battery as a 'mechanical part' and exclude it from accidental damage claims. Some exclude it entirely. Always check the policy wording — specialist EV insurance explicitly includes the battery, often on a new-for-old basis.
Can I use my existing no-claims discount on EV insurance?
Yes — your no-claims discount is transferable between vehicles and insurers. If you're switching from a petrol car to an EV, you can bring your full NCD with you. Some specialist EV insurers even offer introductory discounts for first-time EV drivers.
Is my home charger covered by car or home insurance?
Home chargers often fall into a gap — they may not be explicitly covered by your buildings insurance and are excluded from most standard car policies. Specialist EV car insurance can add home charger and charging cable cover as a specific benefit, giving you clarity.
